PROPPA

There are snooty auto aficionados among us who wouldn’t be caught defecating in anything less than “a proper motor car.” Their choices are fairly limited then to Rolls-Royce and Bentley, each of which has enjoyed a cultural if not honest to goodness automotive resurgence in the last decade. We have “bling” to thank for that as much as we do BMW and Volkswagen ownership, respectively.

In any case, the cars of Rolls and Bentley do make for interesting photography. I found this one parked at the tail end of the group assembled for staging at the NW Classic Rally here in Portland. Though personally, I can’t say I’d much enjoy attacking the undulating roads of Central Oregon in such a wandering behemoth. I’ll take low and lithe, please.

My goal here was to capture that behemothicity, if you will, up close and personal in this early 1950s Bentley Mk VI. I’ve only desaturated it, cropped it tight, and upped the contrast a bit, and I think it succeeds. There is a simultaneous elegance and ridiculousness to these cars, and here I erred on the side of elegance. Perhaps another time I’ll convey the latter.
