THE EYE IN I

I am thrilled to be nibbling on photography once again. I am convinced—and there are those among you who would sure argue otherwise—but I am convinced that the eye matters most in the photographic process.

All else is secondary. The $5,000 camera, the $8,000 lens, the darkroom manipulation and the Photoshop tweak, they fail you without the eye. Light and shadow, too, holiest of all the elements that compose an image, are still merely elements of the process.

Photography begins and ends with the eye.

So true. So often, I’ve had people rush up to me holding their newest overpriced wondercamera. They want me to be impressed, to let them know that I approve of their purchase. Yet I know folks who can outshoot them on a bad day with a cheapie Kodak point and shoot.

In fact, I keep such a camera in my camera bag for those moments when I need to get back to basics. It reminds me that great photographs are indeed born in the mind, and that cameras don’t take pictures. People do.

I’ve been scouring my local craigslist for a cheapie little point-n-shoot digital to keep in my pocket. I’d love to see what I could capture with a $20 camera.
